Olympic Opening Ceremony Party

Shawn
and I are throwing an Olympic Opening Ceremony Party this Friday – the kicker
is we want to have a Russian theme going on. We thought this would be easy
until we started doing our Russian Party Food research and realized there is no
such thing.  Borscht and Russian salad
dressing don’t scream “oh, cute apps!”. We are therefore going oh-so-slightly
Polish and opting for pierogies and kielbasa along with a slew of more
party-friendly Russiany cocktails.
Also,
it’s Shawn’s 31st birthday so that calls for a ridiculous homemade
cake that will most likely have a Russian doll or Rasputin on it – I haven’t
decided yet.
Here
is what we are planning for our Russian-themed party, it certainly won’t be
Romanoff-worthy, but a girl’s got to try.
Shawn is literature snob and has every Russian novel ever written, especially if it was ever a banned book. We plan on putting these out until people start spilling white Russians everywhere.
This garland looks festive and has a winter-feel, and it was only $12 on Etsy.
Moscow Mule:
          DRINK RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 half lime
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 4 to 6 ounces ginger beer, preferably homemade or Cock’n Bull or D&G Old Jamaica brands

         DRINK PREPARATION:

  • Squeeze lime into Collins glass (or copper mug) and drop
in half lime. Add 2 or 3 large ice cubes, then pour in the vodka and
fill with cold ginger beer. Serve with a stirring rod.

White Russian
          DRINK RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 oz.  Belvedere Vodka
  • 0.5 oz. Kahlua
  • 2 oz. cream
  • 1 sprinkle(s) nutmeg

    DRINK PREPARATION:

  • Add cream, Kahlua Liqueur, Belvedere Vodka.
  • Shake with ice and strain into an ice-filled rocks glass.
  • Garnish with a sprinkle nutmeg.
“Russian” Party Food

The
Russian Roulette drinking game found online requires you buy some huge plastic
thing that really makes no sense in our tiny Brooklyn apartment, or anywhere considering
how many times in a lifetime does one play drinking Russian Roulette?
So
I made up my own game I will diligently encourage our party guests to
participate in (ie everyone better “do” this game or they are getting sent
home).
The
game is crazy-easy:
Setup:
6
shot glasses
5
filled with water
1
filled with vodka
Rules:
Get
six people to take the shots all at the same time and everyone will immediately
know who got the “sixth bullet”
The
person who gets the shot also has to do this dance:
Party OVER. do svidaniya (or ‘Goodbye in Russian)
