Shawn and I love lots of things French, mostly cuisine but also our Paris honeymoon, Anthony Bourdain, the underrated Meg Ryan movie French Kiss, but our Parisian love is mostly centered around some minor quiche/escargot obsessions, so we thought a Parisian-themed nursery would be perfectly appropriate. Also, my nursery growing up was (and how classy is my mom for this?) Babar-themed, complete with elephant crib sheets and a framed print of Babar getting his portrait taken. Classic! If you aren’t familiar with the French children’s books about Babar, they are about a precocious French elephant who brings city civilization to jungle elephants (he wears a green three-piece suit, usually) and all of his friends have equally-amazing names, my favorite being of Miss Clavelle, the nurse who carries an alligator purse.
Moving on. We were gung-ho for a Parisian nursery where we could reuse my old Babar nursery items and also hope that it would somehow make our child love moules frites as much as we do. However on our Tulum babymoon (that rhyming never gets old) I found an Otomi pillowcase and immediately decided our child should just as well love Frida Kahlo and chilequiles.
I decided to keep everything “big” white, and add colorful touches in the artwork, rug, and in her party frocks I have already started purchasing…
Here’s a glimpse of our nursery inspiration, may it all fit in our 6×8 ft. little Brooklyn space for her!
