Ways to Help Out This Thanksgiving

The day Shawn and I moved into our new place, I couldn’t help feeling over-the-top happy and lucky all day. I didn’t understand why I
deserved to have such a kind husband, hugely supportive family, friends that
feel like family, and now I had this beautiful piece of real estate to go with
all of it. We went out for Thai food that night, and I started crying real “why
me” tears before the spring rolls arrived, I just felt everything was so
perfect and I wasn’t sure I was the right person to merit such good fortune.
That said, I do try to do my best at being pleasant to strangers, tipping
talented musicians on my morning train, and once in a while use my credit card
for someone other than myself. I give back a couple times a year by giving to
the Bowery Mission, a NYC organization that helps the homeless and feeds the
hungry, and I usually give a bit extra near Thanksgiving as it’s a day no one
should go without a meal.
If you’re able to find a little extra this month to help
those in need, now’s the time to do it! Here are some easy ways to help:
Help men, women, and children in New York City who are in
poverty and in need all forms of compassion. You can donate online here.
Serving food to men, women, and children effected with
HIV/AIDS, cancer, and to those with malnutrition in the fiver boroughs of New
York City and New Jersey. You can volunteer to help make and deliver meals here, or donate
online here.
This organization collects coats all over the country to
give to those in need. Most drives are held in the fall and winter season, so
now’s the time! Find a local place to drop off coat donations here.

Provide meals to seniors in need, whether it’s making and
delivering or serving meals at congregate locations. They deliver one million
meals per day, and have centers across the U.S. You can donate here, or learn how to
volunteer in your community here.

Habitat for Humanity
Builds affordable, stable housing for over 4 million people in need every year. Help build homes for people and their families in need in your community, or abroad. Programs include building with women for women, youth programs, and building for veterans. Volunteer opportunities are here, and you can donate here.

Of course there are a million other places to donate or volunteer, and you can find a list here.

I love the One Warm Coat organization- I always make sure that my mom doesn't just haul our old coats to the thrift store so we can pitch in instead 🙂
